Esgrima: Boston Tournament Report
(Apologies, for this is my first ever Tournament Report :) )
We had 12 players show up for Esgrima: Boston. Everyone was happy to
receive their free copy of Basilia, signed by Amanda, the model who posed
for her picture, along with the rest of their promo materials and prizes.
I went in playing my Nehsi trick deck. PRO/SER. Get blocked, play
Venenation, strike Form of Mist, play Revelation of Desire and burn the
new Corruption counter. It worked out OK for me, but not quite fast enough
to get more than a VP and a half in the second round. Round 2 was the most
interesting for me; I even saw a card I've never seen played before. My
predator played a Blood Bond on my Nadima, so that her +1 intercept
couldn't block Jost's stealth. It kinda worked out for my predator there
when he Legally Manipulated me. Ouch! After I had ousted my prey, the
Ravnos Wall (Draba doesn't matter when my goal is to get blocked anyway),
I was able to steal Camille Devereaux from my grandprey with a Form of
Corruption and actually get some use out of her; she'd already been
bestowed with JS Simmons and a Blood Doll, and she was perfect for my
strategy. Still, the final standoff between my Gangrelsnakes and the "true
Gangrel" went all the way to time.
In both Rounds One and Three, the bane of my existence was Ben Peal's
Gangrel Antitribu light-intercept wall... the most annoying part of which
was his Neighborhood Watch Commanders. In a deck that really just wants
to get blocked, and in worst case can end combat, those dudes really take
their toll on you. It was amusing to see Ben Go Anarch cardlessly with
Chandler Hungerford, to avoid being a rush target for Adonai up the
stream, and it worked in his favor in the end.
It was a very popular day for the Gangrel, although they were diverse
enough that they never contested.
The final round was:
Scott Gomes, with !Toreador tap-bleed horde
Ben Swainbank, playing Advanced Beckett Events/Gangrel Anarchs
Chris O'Brien, with !Salubri with Meat Hooks and Cleavers
Ben Peal, with the Friendly Neighborhood Gangrel
DJ Chagnon, with Stunt Cycling !Brujah
Scott got 2 VPs right off the bat. But then he ran out of steam in
recovery mode, and DJ smashed his way to 1 VP. Ben P finished the job,
getting 2 VPs himself, and winning the tournament. I'll leave the report
on what happened in the Finals to the Finalists themselves.
Here's Ben P's winning deck:
